friends of haystack rock

For September, our featured species at Icefire Glassworks is the Tufted Puffin, and our chosen organization is Friends of Haystack Rock. Operating in Cannon Beach, Oregon, this non-profit is focused on the preservation and protection of intertidal life and the birds that inhabit the Marine Garden and Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge at Haystack Rock. The Tufted Puffin is an iconic bird that nests here from April to August. Their number has been in significant decline. Each year, FOHR connects with thousands of visitors, providing educational materials and lectures, and showing visitors firsthand the Tufted Puffins at Haystack Rock. For information, or to donate, contact Angela Benton, Friends of Haystack Rock, PO Box 1222, Cannon Beach, OR 97110, friendsofhaystackrock.org.

Rules of the Rock

Watch where you step: walk only on bare rocks and sand to avoid stepping on vulnerable creatures like anemones, mussels, and barnacles. If you want to know how something feels, touch it very gently, and keep in mind that some things are unsafe to touch–especially for kids. Enjoy watching wildlife in its natural state and leave things undisturbed for others to discover and enjoy. Don’t pick up any creatures, and don’t take things home. Keep dogs on leashes and under control. Most importantly, come ready to learn and have fun! The button below links to a short Oregon Public Broadcasting video that is well worth your time!
