For January, we welcome 2024 by supporting the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle, and our chosen organization is the Olive Ridley Project.

The Olive Ridley Project (ORP) is a charity registered in England, Wales, and the Maldives, whose mission is to protect sea turtles and their habitats through rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research, and education and outreach. ORP was founded by Dr. Martin Stelfox in 2013. The charity now has bases across Maldives, Seychelles, Kenya, Oman and Pakistan.

About the Olive Ridley

Olive Ridley Sea Turtles are among the smallest of all sea turtles. They are pelagic, spending their time in the open oceans. Like their cousins, the Kemps Ridley, the Olive females often nest in synchronicity with their sisters, emerging onto beaches en masse. Despite the large numbers of hatchlings, their populations are way down from historical estimates. The primary threats to the Olive Ridley are fishing gear entanglement, too much exploitation of eggs and meat, predation, and loss of habitat.
