Texas Sealife Center

For November, our featured species is the Leatherback Sea Turtle, and our chosen organization is Pacuare Reserve, managed by Ecology Project International. They have been working for the last 30 years in protecting the Leatherback sea turtle and collecting data about nesting trends, population status, and nest survival. Pacuare’s beach is considered the most important nesting beach for the leatherback turtle in Costa Rica. The 3.72 miles (6 km) of the beach are walked every night during the nesting and hatching season (from the end of February to September) by the research assistants, volunteers, and groups of students that visit the Reserve. During the hatching season, they also collect data on hatching success and hatching survival by excavating the nests two days after they hatch. You can help them protect this and many other endangered species by visiting, making donations, or buying their products. Want to learn more?
